“Thanks to the Lianas team for all their compassion, hard work and professionalism! We would definitely and strongly recommend Lianas to others in their search for the perfect retirement home!”
THE FAMILY CHALLENGE
Mr. and Mrs. M have been married for 60 years. Mr. M was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s several years ago and his condition has been getting progressively worse. As a result, the demands placed on Mrs. M, the primary caregiver for her husband, have become very difficult. Mr. M weighed approximately 200 lbs and he required assistance with many day-to-day essentials.
They had been living with their daughter in Toronto for the past year but their goal was to move back to Montreal. Having the luxury of time but also recognizing that they should be proactive as Mr. M’s condition worsens, the family reached out to Lianas to assist them with the next steps in their journey.
NEXT STEPS
A Lianas Senior Advisor met with the family to perform a full needs assessment of Mr. and Mrs. M. Through this process, we mutually determined the ideal parameters including geographic location, level of care, budget, meal requirements and most impor tantly, their ideal environment to meet their needs.
THE SEARCH
The Lianas team performed a thorough search of all available options. They have a database of over 1800 senior communities and retirement homes in Greater Montreal, Greater Toronto and Ottawa. In this particular case, the search centered around an English speaking environment in the western part of Montreal offering memory care services. An initial list of over 20 possible options was narrowed down to three locations.
Tours were scheduled and visits were completed with a Lianas Advisor accompanying the family on the tours. From these visits, one senior community was deemed to be the best candidate that met the needs of Mr. and Mrs. M. The Lianas team and the family members worked together to find their ideal senior community.
THE TRANSITION
A lease was signed and Mr. and Mrs. M moved into the senior community that specialized in Assisted Living and Memory Care. The family also used the services of a moving company that assisted them with the move from Toronto to Montreal.
The sales director of the retirement home and her team welcomed Mr. and Mrs. M and assured the family of a smooth transition. Moves involving residences with assisted living and memory care issues can be very challenging. However, the combined effort of the family, the Lianas teamand the wonderful staff at the senior community made it as smooth and transparent as possible.
COMMENTS FROM THE FAMILY
“In the early stages of our search for a retirement home for my parents, who we were planning on moving from another province, we were very fortunate to have been directed to Lianas. Being overwhelmed at the thought of going through many calls and visits on top of not having any expertise, we welcomed the peace of mind that the Lianas team provided. After our one meeting, they went straight to work and narrowed down our options to a few suitable places from the 20 or so residences in our area. They knew exactly what we needed! My parents are now 5 minutes away from my home and just love it!”

“Lianas was like a beacon in the storm or a lighthouse on the shore. Starting this process, we were stressed and overwhelmed. Ms. D. was vulnerable, nervous and very reluctant to move. The Lianas teamprovided us with peace of mind from the very first call. We had a strong level of comfort knowing that we were being well taken care of every step of the way.”
THE FAMILY CHALLENGE
Ms. D., 85 years old, was in relatively good physical and mental shape. She was living alone in her apartment where she had resided for 37 years. Ms. D. started experiencing some vertigo and she felt weak. She was hospitalized and spent several weeks under observation and in rehab. Ms. D. was released and things looked like they were getting back on track but then Ms. D. had a fall where she broke her wrist and damaged her shoulder. During the rehab period at a short term convalescence home, doctors suggested that it might be time to move into a senior community.
Ms. D. was living alone in Montreal, so a very close friend of the family, Carl S., who resides in Ottawa, reached out to Lianas Services for their assistance to find the ideal senior community for her.
NEXT STEPS
A Lianas Senior Advisor met with CS and his wife AL to perform a full needs assessment of Ms. D.. Through this process, we mutually determined the ideal parameters including geographic location, level of care, budget, meal requirements and most impor tantly, the ideal environment for Ms. D. to feel comfortable and happy. This was not an easy step for Ms. D. who was having a difficult time accepting the medical advice that she would have to leave her apartment of 37 years.
THE SEARCH
The Lianas team performed a thorough search of all available options. They have a database of over 1800 senior communities and retirement homes in Greater Montreal, Greater Toronto and Ottawa. In this particular case, the search centered around an English speaking environment offering assisted living in the Montreal locations in the west island of Montreal.
In a very short turnaround time, and taking into consideration that CS and AL would need to take time off work and travel to Montreal for visits, tours were scheduled and visits were completed with a Lianas Advisor accompanying the family on the tours.
CS and AL felt that the advisor was integral in clarifying the details such as availability, inclusions and limitations.
From these visits, two senior communities were deemed to be the best candidates that would meet the needs of Ms. D.. The Lianas Advisor made helpful recommendations when it came time to negotiate terms and conditions. They also provided the family with recommended downsizing and moving companies. A recommended real estate agent was not required as Ms. D. was renting her apartment.
THE RESULT
Ms. D. selected her preferred community. A lease was signed and Ms. D. moved in to the senior community. Although a downsizing company was considered to assist with the move, CS, AL, and his mother (who flew in from Nova Scotia) were able to complete the move on their own.
The sales director as well as the director of care at the senior community were also instrumental in making this transition smooth and transparent.
A bouquet of flowers on behalf of Lianas was sent to Ms. D. on the day of move in to welcome her to her new “home”.
COMMENTS FROM THE FAMILY
As quoted by CS “Lianas was like a beacon in the storm or a lighthouse on the shore. Starting this process, we were stressed and overwhelmed. Ms. D. was vulnerable, nervous and very reluctant to move. The Lianas team provided us with peace of mind from the very first call. We had a strong level of comfort knowing that we were being well taken care of every step of the way. The selection process for the potential senior communities was exemplary. They showed us retirement homes that we didn’t even know existed. In fact, the one we chose wasn’t even on our radar before then. We appreciated the time and energy that Lianas spent in making this transition as smooth as possible. Thank you!!”

Mrs. VG, 93 years old, was living in the Independent Living section of a retirement home. Over the past two years, her physical and cognitive issues were becoming more of a concern for the family and the management team at the retirement home. Her mobility was limited and the symptoms of dementia were becoming more and more prevalent.
The retirement home told the family that Mrs. VG could no longer be a resident at their facility and that she would have to move. The family did not want to put Mrs. VG in the public system so they hired Lianas Services to find the ideal private senior community that would meet their needs including care levels, amenities, geographic limits and budget.
NEXT STEPS
A Lianas Senior Advisor met with the family to perform a full needs assessment of Mrs. VG. Through this process, we mutually determined the ideal parameters including geographic location, level of care, budget, meal requirements and most importantly, the ideal environment for Mrs. VG so that she would feel comfortable and happy. This was not an easy step for her as a move would be disruptive especially considering her memory care issues. Another important factor was that Mrs. VG had a cat that was an important part of her life. The chosen senior community needed to be pet friendly.
THE SEARCH
The Lianas team performed a thorough search of all available options. They have a database of over 1800 senior communities and retirement homes in Greater Montreal, Greater Toronto and Ottawa. In this particular case, the search centred around an English and Italian speaking environment offering full memory care services. An initial list of over 10 possible options was narrowed down to three locations.
Tours were scheduled and visits were completed with a Lianas Advisor accompanying the family on the tours. From these visits, one senior community was deemed to be the best candidate that met the needs of Mrs. VG. The Lianas team and the family members worked together to find the ideal accommodations that met the memory care and physical care needs of Mrs. VG. And of course, finding a senior community that would accept her beloved cat.
THE TRANSITION
A lease was signed and Mrs. VG moved into the senior community that specialized in Assisted Living. The family did not require the services of a downsizing company or real estate broker as they were able to handle the move on their own.
The sales director and her team welcomed Mrs. VG to their community and assured the family of a smooth transition. Moves involving residences with assisted living and memory care issues can be very challenging. However, the combined effort of the family, the Lianas team and the wonderful staff at the senior community made it as smooth and transparent as possible.
COMMENTS FROM THE FAMILY
Ms. AG, daughter of Mrs. VG, commented: “The team from Lianas was compassionate, understanding and patient. The tours which were arranged and accompanied by a Lianas Senior Advisor were excellent and very well organized. We were able to get answers to all our questions and we were able to get the real picture. My brother and I now have the peace of mind that our mom is now in a safe, secure and caring environment. I would absolutely recommend Lianas for families that are in a similar situation”.

“Working together they do all the work and do it amazingly well, leaving me free to undertake the many important personal matters involved in moving from one province to another”
-Mr. John Dorey
BACKGROUND
Mr. Dorey, a 91-year-old former engineer, knew it was time to move, so he took matters into his own hands. He recalled an interview he heard on CJAD radio with Matt Del Vecchio, founder and president of Lianas Services, a company that specializes in retirement home search and transition support. Following a pleasant conversation on the phone with Matt, Mr. Dorey hired Lianas Services to find him the ideal seniors’ residence that would meet his specific needs, which included a kitchen with a fridge, stove with oven and sink for washing up, as well as a pet-friendly residence to accommodate his large 90 lb. dog, Max.
NEXT STEPS
Based on Mr. Dorey’s outlined “must-have” independent living requirements for relocating to a senior’s residence, Matt met with Mr. Dorey to perform a full needs assessment and an in-depth investigation. Through this process, together, Lianas Services and Mr. Dorey were able to mutually determine the ideal parameters of a senior’s residence, including location, level of care, budget, meal requirements and the ideal environment for Mr. Dorey so that he would feel comfortable and happy in his new home.
The unique part of this process was that Mr. Dorey wanted to move from his home in Montreal to be closer to family. He had children living in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. The final decision was to move to the Ottawa area.
THE SEARCH
Matt and the rest of the Lianas team performed a thorough search of all available options for Mr. Dorey. Lianas has a database of over 2000 senior communities and retirement homes in Greater Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa areas. In this particular case, a pet-friendly home with a fully-equipped kitchen were two crucial requirements for Mr. Dorey. Following the search, an initial list of many possible options was narrowed down to three locations.
Tours were scheduled and visits were completed with a Lianas Advisor accompanying Mr. Dorey and his family on the tours. From these visits, one senior community was deemed to be the best candidate that met the needs of Mr. Dorey. The Lianas Advisor made helpful recommendations when it came time to negotiate terms and conditions. It was a low rise residence in Orleans, a suburb of Ottawa which was located within about 7 kilometers from where one of Mr. Dorey’s sons lived with his family.
THE TRANSITION – DOWNSIZE AND SALE OF THE HOME
The first step was to downsize – not an easy task considering Mr. Dorey lived in his house for more than 60 years. Matt introduced Mr. Dorey to the owners of Entourage Relocation. They sorted through an accumulation of everything that cluttered the house, arrange the sale or disposal of what he no longer needed and move the essentials to Ottawa for him.
Once the house had been emptied of clutter, Matt’s wife, Stefanie Cadou, “a terrific real estate agent,” as stated by Mr. Dorey, stepped in to sell the house. Within one week Mr. Dorey accepted the best of the many offers and the sale formalities were under way.
Moving into a seniors’ residence can be a challenge with many obstacles to overcome. However, the combined effort of Mr. Dorey, the Lianas team and the wonderful staff at the senior community made the transition as smooth and transparent as possible.
COMMENTS FROM THE FAMILY
As quoted by Mr. Dorey himself: “During my engineering career, I always sought out and employed competent experts to undertake the specialized work on my projects, and that is how I view the role Matt Del Vecchio, his Lianas team and the other people he brings in like Entourage and Stefanie Cadou, Working together they do all the work and do it amazingly well, leaving me free to undertake the many important personal matters involved in moving from one province to another like having the mail redirected, applying for a new medicare card, finding a new doctor & dentist, moving the bank account and safe deposit box, getting a new driver’s and car license and meeting with a lawyer & a broker for a new will, a new mandate and new insurance policies.”
